We all know that between finishing up work and making it to the Saddledome for a Calgary Flames game, there’s not much time for a nice dinner. Of course, the nachos and hotdogs at the ‘dome have a certain charm but they shouldn’t be your only option.

Here are a few suggestions close to the Saddledome that can get you fed quickly and well before the puck drops.

Caffe Rosso

This little cafe offers up a simple menu of sandwiches, salads and soups, which are served up in no time. This location recently added a wine and beer list, so you can also enjoy a couple brews before the big game. (425 11 Ave. S.E., 587-352-5080, cafferosso.ca, @cafferosso)

Ed’s Restaurant

On 17th Avenue, but typically forgotten about, this long-standing restaurant has a wide menu spanning appetisers, pastas, pizzas and more. It has a large variety of gluten-free options too and it’s only a couple blocks from the Saddledome. (202 17 Ave. S.E., 403-262-3500, edsrestaurant.com)

Loungeburger

Definitely known more for its atmosphere than its food but nonetheless, with it’s proximity to the rink, you can have a burger, a beer and find your way to your seat for game-time in under an hour. (270 14 Ave. S.E., 403-250-2747)

Model Milk

Pop by for a bite here early and you’ll avoid the hecticness of peak dinner service. A few small plates and some hand-crafted cocktails with leave you in tip top shape for cheering on the Flames. (308 17 Ave. S.W., 403-265-7343, modelmilk.ca, @ModelMilkBistro)

Olives

You’ll be hard pressed to find a better quality dinner as close to the Saddledome. The Italian-centric offerings here may not exactly be “hockey food,” but kicking off the evening with a sit-down meal is a nice contrast to the several hours of shouting and cheering later on. (1129 Olympic Way S.E., 403-265-4613)

Sunterra Market Keynote

Always abuzz with quick in-and-out lunchers during the work week, don’t forget that Sunterra is a great spot for dinner too. From an extensive salad bar to hot and cold entree options, this is an ideal location to grab some sustenance when you’re running a tad behind schedule. (200 12 Ave. S.E., 403-261-6772, sunterramarket.com)
