The renovation

This home was originally built in 1913 as one of five houses in a row built by the same family. In 1993, the home’s current owner purchased it, and in 1996, they began the first of many renovations.

Initially, the owner updated the home’s exterior with new shingles, a restored staircase and new colours to enhance the architectural details of the woodwork. In 2008, the owner took on a major renovation to tackle issues like little headroom in the basement, signs of asbestos and structural stability issues. Over three years, the house was raised to replace the old foundation, energy-saving insulation was installed, new windows were added while keeping the location of the original windows and a second storey was added, alongside many more renovations.

A few features from the original structure were included in the new renovations. A brick flower bed in the backyard was built using the original brick from the 1913 chimney. All cast-iron, cold-air grilles from the 1913 period were refinished and reused in the renovation as well. In 2013, the renovations on the home won the prestigious SAM award for best single-family home renovation with addition in Calgary and Region.

What to love

As a classic craftsman-style home with modern amenities, there’s plenty to love about this home. The home’s exterior is a bright and timeless display of craftsman-style architecture.

Inside, the main floor has its own office with access to the living room and a gas fireplace. Large windows infuse the space with a warm light that plays off the many natural wood accents. The kitchen boasts a striking granite island, stainless steel appliances, under-cabinet lighting and a pantry. The serene dining room is a dinner retreat with space, light and a view of the backyard.

Upstairs, an upper-level sunroom is perfect for a home library, exercise space or sitting room for even more relaxation. The primary bedroom has double French doors, two skylights inside, four ample closets, two built-in dressers and plenty of space. The spa-like ensuite continues the luxuriousness with in-floor heating, a steam shower, a soaker/massage jetted tub, a double vanity and a large makeup station.

Outside, the backyard boasts mature trees, garden boxes and perennials.

What to consider

This home is conveniently located just minutes from downtown and 16th Avenue N.E., with plenty of local schools within walking or driving distance. Prince’s Island Park and nearby golf courses and parks offer additional options for walking or biking.
