From May 1 to 3, Alberta Ballet brings Calgarians a reimagined performance of the classic Don Quixote. The upbeat, dynamic show comes as Alberta Ballet’s closing production for its 2024/25 season.
Don Quixote will transport audience members to Spain as they follow the story of Don Quixote and his squire, Sancho Ponzo, a comedic duo who embark on a journey of misadventures. Originally written as a two-part novel by Miguel de Cervantes in the early 1600s, the story has taken shape through ballet for centuries. In fact, it’s a title Alberta Ballet’s artistic director, Francesco Ventriglia, knows well — he danced in a Don Quixote performance during his teenage years in Italy.
Now, the romantic comedy comes to Calgary, showcasing Ventriglia’s artistic vision for a new take on a classic, where ballet lovers and first-timers alike will enjoy a night of fun.
A classic reimagined
Although Ventriglia’s version is new and innovative, he’s kept the foundation of what makes Don Quixote such an appealing show. The choreography builds on the original, still demonstrating the technicality and liveliness of the dances.
“Don Quixote is one of the most difficult ballets dancers can perform because there’s a lot of technical challenges,” says Ventriglia. “The level of technique in this ballet is very high. Our dancers do an excellent job, as usual, to bring forward as high a quality [performance] as possible.”
Alberta Ballet also commissioned a whole new design. Along with Ventriglia’s fresh choreography, the show will feature custom costumes and a brilliant set design by Gianluca Falaschi.
“I have an amazing creative team, so with my designer, we really went down a colourful path, inspired by the Spanish architect Gaudi,” says Ventriglia. “The costumes are very fun and colourful — it’s a version that we put together where the public can be transported into this fun, vibrant world.”
Alberta on the world stage
Alberta Ballet closes its season with a technically challenging and brilliant performance, reminding Albertans of the talent that resides here. “Albertans should be really proud of their ballet company because the results we are achieving are incredible,” says Ventriglia.
The known calibre and quality of Don Quixote is not a one-off for the company. Alberta Ballet puts on big-name titles presented by some of the most recognized ballet houses in the world. The company is garnering international recognition — the team has just returned from a tour in Dubai.
During Ventriglia’s first season with Alberta Ballet, he watched the company continue to grow at an elite level, and he extends a heartfelt thank you to the Albertans supporting and recognizing the work being done.
“Sometimes, when you dream big, it seems that the dreams you have are impossible to realize. But actually, when everyone believes in the same dream, everything becomes possible, and here at the Alberta Ballet, this is happening,” he says. “Our dancers are so talented. We’re dreaming very big, and we’re making them come true — presenting this big, full-length ballet and new productions to come.”
Bewilderment for everyone
Don Quixote brings together spirited choreography, comedic storytelling and incredible talent for an impressive production that’s suitable for anyone looking for an eventful evening out.
“Because of the athleticism that you find in this ballet and the fun in the story, it’s a ballet for everyone. Of course, for ballet lovers, it’s a joy, but for people who may be approaching ballet for the first time, it’s the perfect title because it’s fun. It introduces you to the ballet world in a very nice way,” says Ventriglia. “There is this element of athleticism and choreography that catches your eye. It’s a perfect title for a first date or a night out with friends.”
Ballet lovers can also see Don Quixote in Edmonton May 9-10.
