Things can get expensive during the holidays, but there are still ways to have fun without spending a lot of (or any) money. Here’s a look at some free things to check out in Calgary during December.
Deck the Walls! Group Exhibition at Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art
Newzones’ annual group exhibition Deck the Walls features more than 70 small art pieces presented on a single wall. It’s quite a sight to see all the fantastic paintings, photos, sculptures and more presented this way, and the selection is refreshed as they are bought. All of the pieces are available for purchase, but admission to Newzones and Deck the Walls is free. There’s also an exhibition by contemporary landscape painter Peter Hoffer. Both exhibits are on through December until early January.

Winter Wonderland Activities at the Calgary Public Library
Throughout the month of December, head to Calgary Public Library’s (CPL) Central and Memorial Park locations for free special programming. From performances by local talent, to book readings with Mayor Jyoti Gondek, to screenings of family-friendly movies like Frozen, CPL’s Winter Wonderland series has something for everyone. Winter Wonderland events run until December 31.

Christmas Lights at Spruce Meadows
At Spruce Meadows, this drive-thru Christmas lights display is an annual tradition. Part of the display’s appeal is the ability to enjoy it from your car, but you can walk through it, too. Stop along the way for hot drinks, food and warm up by the fire pits. The Christmas Lights at Spruce Meadows are open Fridays to Sundays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. until December 29.

Outdoor Skating at Olympic Plaza
What better way is there to enjoy December in Calgary than ice skating? Pack your hot chocolate, head to Olympic Plaza and throw on your skates for some classic winter fun. The Olympic Plaza rink is open until 11 p.m. every day (weather permitting) and there are lights and decorations surrounding the park. Skate rentals are available if needed for a fee.

Visit one of the five locations at spots like the Calgary Christmas Market (December 8) or Heritage Park (December 10) for a free Coke and holiday photos with Santa.
